  • If you are hoping to get pregnant, having sex two or three times a week throughout the month gives you the best chance for success. There is no need to time sex around the woman’s monthly cycle, it’s better to simply have more sex throughout the month.
  • Nine out of ten couples in which the woman is under 35 will conceive after one year of having regular unprotected sex. If you have been trying for a year or more, and have not been successful, you should speak to a doctor. Your doctor can advise you on the next steps, and do tests to help identify fertility problems.
  • Eating a healthy varied diet during pregnancy will help your baby develop. You can get most vitamins and minerals from the food you eat, but when you get pregnant it is recommended you take a folic acid supplement. It is recommended you take 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid each day from before you are pregnant until you are twelve weeks pregnant. You could consider taking 10micrograms (mcg) of Vitamin D.   • If you are trying to get pregnant, try and keep to a healthy weight. Being overweight can lead to fertility problems, and also is linked to health problems in pregnancy, such as high blood pressure, blood clots, miscarriage and gestational diabetes.
  • Drinking alcohol in pregnancy can cause harm to the baby. The risk to the baby is greater the more you drink. Experts are not sure if any alcohol is completely safe to drink whilst pregnant, so the safest approach is not to drink alcohol to keep risks to a minimum.
